  • Gonorrhea is spread through unprotected sex – anal, oral and vaginal sex

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Symptoms are similar to those of chlamydia, with the possible additions of:
  • Greenish/yellow discharge
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Sore throat
  • Rectal pain

What can I do now?

  • Antibiotics are used to treat gonorrhea
  • Both partners must be treated simultaneously to avoid re-infection
  • Avoid sex – anal, oral and vaginal – during treatment

If I Ignore It, Maybe It Will Go Away?

  • No. If you notice any of the above symptoms, get tested
  • If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to sterility in both men and women
  • Can also cause heart problems, blindness, skin disease, and arthritis
  • An infected mother can transmit it to her infant during birth

How Can I keep this from Happening Again?

  • Avoid unprotected sex; use condoms (latex, polyurethane) for vaginal, anal and oral sex, as weel as dental dams or nonperforated plastic wrap as a barrier if performing oral/vaginal or oral/anal sex.
